I cannot tell a lie, these last few weekends have been amazing! My friend Christina and I have decided to have a day during the week where we do some type of cultural enriching activity.I just call it, "Fridays with Christina" .One of our first adventures was at the MALBA museo. Now if you know anything about me,I hate art museums. They are FAR too fancy for me.What I imagine at an art museums are people are dressed up super fancy drinking wine interpreting art.I am Not the fancy type, can't legally drink wine, and art interpretation is NOT my thing. PERO, este museo fue diferente. The featured artist is an schizophrenic Japanese woman,Yayoi Kusama, who in my opinion is an AMAZING artist. Christina and I waited in line for an hour to get into the museo. It was worth every cold minute. ALL the exhibits were fascinating, thought provoking and honestly just really cool.My favorite part was the sticker room! Every person who entered the museum got a pack of stickers,so when we we got to the exhibit we could put the stickers wherever we wanted. We were like Kids in the Candy store. We walked out covered in stickers and full of laughter.
Last weekend Christina and I decided to go to a Polo Match.I have never gone to one in the states because usually they are so expensive. Here,We went for Gratis(Free)! It was AWESOME,on top of the day being so beautiful. We only got to see half of the game due to us being on Argentine time:/ but we were allowed to walk on the field after. While walking home I saw the most BEAUTIFUL gated area called the "Hipodromo del Palermo"I told christina to come check it out with me..We walked straight thru the gates only to find out it was a HORSE RACE!!!!!! The Jockeys were warming up their horses right in front of us. Old men gathered around explaining the game to others, sharing who they were betting for and praying to Mary their horse won. The races were full of shouting, cheering and old men hugging with joy when they won. It was soooo hilarious.I would love to go again!
Sunday I had my first meeting with my College mentee Guada. If any of you did not know I was given the opportunity with ICANA/Education USA to be a mentor in the College Club.It is a program that helps high school students from Argentina whom are interested in going to college in the states. The students are paired up with an American college student to help them with their application, and talk about college options, help with Essays, talk about scholarships, etc. First let me tell you The place we met up (El atereno) was BEAUTIFUL.It's built like an opera house but its a library. It definitely was blowing Barnes and Nobles out of the water.Let me tell you about my AMAZING mentee, she is 16 and wayyy ahead of her time. She speaks AMAZING English, on top of learning a third language, politically aware, ambitious, and the sweetest girl. .She is truly going places! Her dream is to go to Harvard as an Econ Major. I am going to do everything in my power to help her.I look forward to our next meeting:)
